The Rail Nordica project, currently under development in Finland, will strengthen connections to the west and support security of supply, military mobility and Finland’s accessibility. The importance of northern transport routes has grown as part of Europe and NATO’s logistical networks, and their development is an investment in Finland’s overall security and operational capability.
The Digirail project is laying the groundwork for the future of international rail transport. As part of this project, Finland will transition to the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), which will improve rail interoperability and integrate Finland more closely into the European rail system.
ERTMS is also a prerequisite for the development of new international rail connections. If new connections linking Finland to the European rail network are built in the future, they must operate in accordance with common European standards. The Digirail project is already laying the technological foundation for these connections.
At the same time, the Digirail project will modernise railway traffic control and safety systems and strengthen the railway system’s cybersecurity, operational reliability and readiness to meet the needs of a changing operating environment. The project will lay the groundwork for future international rail transport to operate safely, efficiently and seamlessly.
New connections are being built as part of Rail Nordica, and Digirail will enable their operation. Together, these projects will strengthen Finland’s connections to Europe and support societal safety, security of supply, and competitiveness.
The Digirail project is making rail transport in Finland safer, smoother and more efficient. The project is reinventing the outdated train control system and introducing a shared European radio-based train control system across the entire rail network. Digirail will enable safe transport, an improved service level and growth of capacity, and it will create a long-term technical foundation for Finnish railway traffic. The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, Fintraffic and the Ministry of Transport and Communications are collaborating in the project with other actors.
