We are looking to hire two thesis workers in the ‘technical entity’ area of responsibility within the Digirail project.

Fintraffic employs more than 1,100 top professionals across four modes of transport. We wish to contribute to Finland having the safest, smoothest and most environmentally friendly traffic in the world. We actively develop digital solutions for the future and are working towards creating a world-class transport ecosystem in Finland.

Fintraffic Railway Ltd is responsible for rail traffic control and management services within the Fintraffic Group. The purpose of the Digirail project is to make rail transport in Finland more efficient and smoother. Digirail represents a significant investment in the future of Finnish rail transport, and its impacts will also be significant: more rail transport, more passengers, better services, fewer disruptions and lower emissions. Digirail is a shared opportunity for the entire sector, laying down the technological foundation for rail transport far into the future.

The most important technological change will be the introduction of radio-based train safety procedures; the Digirail project aims to leverage commercial radio networks to achieve this.

Thesis worker: AI radio network analysis

As a thesis worker, your role will be to use AI to analyse the radio network coverage and other parameters across the entire 6,000-km rail network. The measurements have already been made across the network, with more than 1 million data points accumulated. Some of these measurements (on 2,000 km of the network) were made in ‘packet replication’ mode, while on the remaining 4,000 km the measurements were made in another mode; therefore, ‘packet replication’ needs to be simulated for the latter. Combining the measurement data with the structure of rail transport will potentially allow anticipation of the incidence and scope of disruptions due to radio communications on the Finnish rail network in the future.

This job is best suited for a student whose main subject is machine learning, signal processing or data analysis. Having completed units in telecommunications technology as a secondary subject is an advantage but not necessary.

Thesis worker: Telecommunications satellite connections

The number of telecommunications satellites is constantly increasing, and their coverage in Finland is improving. Satellite performance and the quality of receivers are also improving all the time. Your job will be to study the feasibility of using a satellite link as a primary or secondary means for controlling trains and to devise a road map for this concept for Digirail.

This job is best suited for a student whose main subject is telecommunications technology and wireless networks. Any units completed relevant to satellite communications (including GNSS) are considered an advantage.

In both roles, we value good cooperation and communication skills and initiative. We expect you to be in the final stage of your studies and hope that you will be able to focus fully on your master’s thesis as of this summer. The precise start date for the master’s thesis project will be agreed upon separately with the successful candidates.

We request that both master’s theses be written in English. You will be paid for your period of employment while working on your master’s thesis.

What we offer:

  • You will have the opportunity to work on a project that will fundamentally change Finnish railways.
  • You will find an inspiring and dynamic workplace community and a result-oriented environment.
  • You will work with brilliant colleagues across the railway industry, including top European professionals.
  • You will have employer-subsidised lunches, a commuter benefit, flexible working hours and comprehensive occupational health care services.

Fintraffic is governed by the Group’s values, which outline how we want to work together and what is important. These values inform our day-to-day operations, decision-making and interactions: We ensure safety, we care, and we point the way. Together. Please have a look at our values video at the bottom of this page.
